Book Launch Discussion - "Riding the Populist Wave: Europe's Mainstream Right in Crisis" - Prof. Dr. Cristóbal Rovira Kaltwasser, IRC Senior Fellow

Discussion | Can the Liberal Script Still Be Saved?

Researchers from SCRIPTS presented the cluster's research approaches and preliminary findings as part of the Humboldt Forum's "MitWissenschaft" series in Berlin on 27 May. The discussion focused on the question of why liberal democracies are in crisis and how their "liberal script" could be saved. The event is only available in German.

Faces of SCRIPTS

In the first season of our “Faces of SCRIPTS” series we introduced several doctoral researchers of SCRIPTS. In the video interviews, we talked to them about their PhD projects, their research interests or how they coped with their arrival in Berlin.

Discussion Series | Futuring the Liberal Script

Futuring is not necessarily a variant of optimizing – it rather relates to the question of how to develop a critical analytical but also creative stance in response to current contestations and erosions of liberal values. The conversation series “Futuring the Liberal Script” reflects on future political imaginaries and current crisis phenomena.

Retrospective of the Inaugural Conference

How can we analyze contemporary pressure on the model, concept and normative tenets of the liberal order? How can we investigate contemporary controversies about the liberal script – in their interconnections and commonalities as well as variations across time and space? All these questions were the subject of our inaugural conference. Watch the film about this inspiring event.

Science in Translation

The Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script" (SCRIPTS) deals at the Humboldt Lab with the promises of the liberal order: What do they consist of? What problems and conflicts do they entail, and what are the inner contradictions? In the inaugural exhibition of the Humboldt Lab, SCRIPTS also addresses how liberal democracies respond to current challenges such as the Corona pandemic and how their responses differ from authoritarian states.

Lecture | The Rise of Authoritarian Populism

On September 19, 2019, Prof. Tanja A. Börzel and Prof. Thomas Risse held a lecture on “Contestations of the Liberal Script: The Rise of Authoritarian Populism” at Universidade de São Paulo, one of SCRIPTS’ partners in South America.
