Public Presentation | "Laborastories" with Researchers from Berlin's Clusters of Excellence at Mall Anders

Jun 10, 2022 | 03:00 PM - 05:00 PM

In the format of storytelling, researchers from the Berlin Clusters of Excellence present current research projects (in German), hosted by the Berlin University Alliance in cooperation with SCRIPTS.

With the "laborastories", we want to get into conversation about how our work can contribute to better understanding current crises of the liberal order within societies and all over the world.

A cooperation of Mall Anders, Berlin University Alliance, and the Clusters of Excellence Neuro Cure, MATH +, Matters of Activity, Science of Intelligence (SCIoI), Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat) and SCRIPTS.

Speakers

Dr. Sabine Oldemeyer is a biophysicist and postdoctoral researcher at Freie Universität Berlin and UniSysCat.

Kiara Freitag is a PhD student at Charité, Institute of Neuropathology and at NeuroCure.

Dr. Heiko Giebler is a postdoc at Freie Universität Berlin and the WZB. For SCRIPTS he is the Head of the Comparative Survey Research Group.

Dr. Felix Günther is a research associate in the area of "Discrete Differential Geometry" at the Technical University of Berlin. In his research, he has developed, among other things, a theory of surfaces that are composed of flat parts but behave like curved ones - a theory with beautiful applications in architecture! In addition to his research activities in the Cluster of Excellence MATH+, he is involved in science communication and talent development.

Nicolas Roth is a PhD student working on computational models of attention. At SCIoI, he is working on project 01, "Object-level scene descriptions and attention in visual search." The goal of his project at SCIoI is to find out how visual scene analysis strategies are formed in humans and to apply these findings to computer vision tasks. This project is supervised by Klaus Obermayer, Martin Rolfs and Olaf Hellwich. Nico studied physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, where he mainly worked on computational astrophysics and image processing for applications in environmental physics. Before joining SCIoI, he worked in theoretical neuroscience, specifically studying the effects of external stimulation on whole brain network dynamics.

Yoonha Kim is an anthropologist who researches how people imagine the future and act as a result. She studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in London and Visual & Media Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin. In the Object Space Agency project, she considers traditional Korean clothing - the 'hanbok' - as 'active matter' and explores how the East Asian ontology embedded in the costume can trigger divergent forms of existence of digital objects.

Dr. Jochen Müller is a science journalist. He is also a science slammer, presenter, gives workshops and is a project partner for science exhibitions.

About the "Mall Anders".

The temporary learning lab Mall Anders (located in the shopping mall Wilma Shoppen in Berlin-Charlottenburg) was initiated by the universities of Berlin and is funded by the Berlin University Alliance until the end of June 2022. The learning lab in the style of a pop-up store leaves the spatial context of universities to intertwine with Berlin's urban and civil society innovatively and experimentally. So far, this new meeting place has offered students and local actors the opportunity to think about pressing issues of our future, to discuss proposed solutions, and sometimes to test them directly on a small scale. Since December 2021, a wide range of events on various topics has been taking place there. The Mall Anders has a model character for further projects of knowledge exchange as well as the visibility of the Clusters of Excellence of the Berlin University Alliance and its topics in unusual places.

SCRIPTS at Mall Anders

SCRIPTS wants to achieve a knowledge exchange between scientists, civil society, and citizens in the neighbourhood by cooperating with the Mall Anders. As interactive and comprehensible as possible, academics and non-academics alike shall have the opportunity to discuss liberal orders at eye level and to examine its contestations, potentials, and problems. Whether in cooperation with the other Clusters of Excellence of the Berlin University Alliance or on our own, at Mall Anders the cluster wants to bring the topics and research of SCRIPTS to the public and discuss them with an audience as broad as possible. Since SCRIPTS is about social science, it is aiming to interact with civil society in new and experimental ways, discussing and working on broad social challenges with them. In the Mall Anders, the cluster does not simply want to hold lectures or panel discussions but to achieve an exchange of knowledge of the big social issues examined by SCRIPTS by interacting with local actors; for instance, in Science Slams, Meet the Scientist, workshops, and interactive exhibitions.
