Internal Workshop | Weber, the Liberal Script and the Globalisation of International Society

May 12, 2022 - May 13, 2022

Workshop of the Einstein Research Group and SCRIPTS, organised by Prof. Andrew Hurrell and Dr. Álvaro Morcillo Laiz. Restricted access for invited participants.

Interest in Max Weber within academic International Relations has increased very significantly. But different approaches to Weber rarely talk to each other and often remain distant both from work in other disciplines and from more specialist scholarship on Weber himself. Weber’s concern with the consequences of a universalizing, modern capitalism touch on many aspects of the contemporary debates about liberalism and the liberal script.

The Einstein Research Group hosts this interdisciplinary workshop that draws on a range of disciplines and intellectual traditions. It is intended to make a self-standing contribution to clarify what utility Weber and Weberian social theory could have for contemporary International Relations, if any. At the same time, the workshop aims at deepening the theoretical and conceptual engagement both with the Einstein Research Group’s work on Latin America on the one hand, and the concerns of the Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS on the other. Both the Einstein Research Group and SCRIPTS are based at the Political Science Department at Freie Universität Berlin.
