Diversity

SCRIPTS is committed to fostering excellent research by promoting the diversity of people and perspectives. We strive to create an inclusive environment, where all members should have equal opportunities to prosper academically. At the same time, we take a pluralistic look at the varieties of the liberal script and its contestations across the globe.

The Diversity and Excellence Commission (DEC) guides this ambition and critically examines its implementation within SCRIPTS. We acknowledge that academia perpetuates structural inequalities affecting qualified researchers beyond considerations of academic merit. Through the openness of our diversity approach, we are able to identify and address the most significant dimensions of diversity specific to the SCRIPTS context.

The DEC focuses on those dimensions of diversity that are frequently associated with disadvantage within academia. The figure highlights the dimensions we have identified - beyond legally protected features - as priorities for our work.

Working closely with SCRIPTS governance structures, the DEC actively promotes diversity in both the SCRIPTS community and its research output. The Commission is involved in the design of fair and transparent selection procedures, e.g., for projects and personnel. To mitigate unequal treatment both at individual level and across the entire cluster, the commission monitors SCRIPTS’ selection processes. The DEC also provides targeted support to members of the cluster who are particularly affected by structural inequalities. The figure above helps us identify moments of intersectional disadvantage and counteract them with tailored measures. The Numbers section offers further insight into how our human resources measures contribute to the diverse composition of the cluster.
