Report: Visiting Doctoral Researchers

Visiting Doctoral Researchers come to SCRIPTS on the basis of irregular calls for 12 months, or are funded on their own initiative for up to 6 months. They can participate in colloquia, courses and research projects, but are free to pursue their own research project.

SCRIPTS has accepted a number of new Visiting Doctoral Fellows in March 2022. With this programme, SCRIPTS particularly supports doctoral students from disadvantaged regions or with corresponding biographies. No new scholarships are currently being awarded.

Research Training Fellowship

The Research Training Fellowship helps doctoral researchers from structurally disadvantaged regions and biographies to get access to international mobility at the earliest stage of their careers. They join SCRIPTS as Visiting Doctoral Fellows from April 2022 until March 2023 and receive a modest stipend for their stay in Berlin. During this time, they are part of the academic life at SCRIPTS and enjoy BGTS doctoral training. Afterwards, they will return to their home institutions, where they finish their PhD programs. SCRIPTS also benefits from this program: Through the Fellows' participation, the SCRIPTS community gains new perspectives and voices for its discussions.

With the Research Training Fellowship, the BGTS and the Quality Management and Diversity Unit of SCRIPTS tackles two challenges:

  1. Consistent internationalization of academic CVs is understood as a sign of academic quality. Doctoral researchers in structurally disadvantaged regions often have less access to international mobility.
  2. Full-fledged internationalization in academia intensifies the brain drain from disadvantaged regions.

This funding line thus fits into the goal of SCRIPTS to reflect doctoral education sustainably, responsibly and with the ethos of “double reflexivity”.

Current Visiting Doctoral Fellows (April 2022 – March 2023)

"Here at SCRIPTS, I've been happy to enjoy the company of fellow academics, which has allowed me to learn a lot, get really good feedback about my project, participate in very insightful seminars and build a nice network of PhD students, besides getting good remarks from my supervisor. One highlight was the seminar with Denise Ferreira: not only getting in touch with her work, but being able to discuss it personally with her. I have also been able to participate in courses at Hertie School and to study in one course of GESIS Summer School, which has allowed me to greatly improve my methodology - one of my goals in the program. All in all, it has been a good experience that is allowing me to grow academically."
"It is a real pleasure for me to be a guest in the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)”. The research context of the cluster is very interesting, because it relates to the topic of my doctoral thesis. In my thesis I have developed the position that the international conventions on children rights cannot be applied without adaptation in African countries like Benin. In the context of SCRIPTS, I found the possibility to debate on this position, which is a critic of the liberal script. I have also benefited from SCRIPTS in terms of working on my dissertation, articles and continuing my literature research. I also enjoy the theoretical and methodological seminars and trainings."
