The SCRIPTS Project "Gender, Borders, Memory" (GBM) examines the role of gender and memory in the context of borders and border regions in the liberal script. It analyzes to which extent different impressions of gender and gender roles, both past and present, have influenced the development of borders and border conflicts in liberal regimes. The project will research and use a case study of the separatist movement of Catalonia, examining images, symbols, and arguments relating to gender and memory in the in the context of mobilization and protest. The significance of colonial memories, for example, the siege of Barcelona in 1714, the Spanish-American War in 1898, or the Catalonian suffrage movement in the early 20th Century will play a central role in the analysis of the search for Catalonian self-determination from a gender-specific perspective.

The chosen candidate will work closely in an interdisciplinary context with the project leaders Prof. Dr. Jessica Gienow-Hecht (International History) and Prof. Dr. Gülay Çağlar (Professor of Political Science focusing on Gender and Diversity). The successful candidate in history will analyze the separatist movement’s entanglement with historical memory such as 1741, 1898 and the early regional feminist movement, and examine how memory and historical reference points including gender norms, activism and imagery inform current contestations of liberal borders.
