About the Junior Research Group “Comparative Survey”

The Junior Research Group “Comparative Survey” develops, implements and analyses the comparative public opinion survey “Public Attitudes towards the liberal script” (PALS). The goal of PALS is first and foremost to measure citizen attitudes in different countries around the globe towards what we call the liberal script. In a first wave, the survey has been conducted in 26 countries with over 50,000 respondents in 2021/22. A second wave was conducted in 2022/23 adding four new countries and revisiting several of the countries of Wave 1. About the Berlin Graduate School for Global and Transregional Studies (BGTS)

The Berlin Graduate School for Global and Transregional Studies (BGTS) is the full-time PhD programme of the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS). The BGTS offers a rigorous and dynamic English-language PhD programme for exceptionally talented and motivated graduate students in the field of global and transregional studies, bringing together a broad spectrum of disciplines and methodological approaches.

The successful applicant will become a full-time member of BGTS while also being integrated into the Junior Research Group.

Job Description

The candidate is expected to participate in the analysis of an opinion survey conducted in more than 25 countries (Public Attitudes towards the Liberal Script, PALS). Candidates should have expertise in (survey) data analysis, quantitative methods and explain in their proposal what specific research question they intend to pursue with the survey. While additional data may be used in the thesis, the survey data should play a key role in answering the candidate’s research question.

The position is funded for three years, starting from September 1, 2023. Enumeration is according to 65% Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L (ca. 1.800 €/mo. net).

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree, qualifying for PhD studies in the social sciences
  • Expertise in (survey) data analysis & quantitative methods

  • Most recent CV
  • Letter of motivation (600 words maximum)
  • Research proposal (max. three pages) including ideas on how the survey data is supposed to be used
  • Name and contact information of two scholars who can be contacted and who are willing to provide information about the candidate.
